The Exposition of the Index (Anukramaṇī) of the Śrīmad Bhāgavata
वृत्राख्यानं ततः पश्चान्मरुतां जन्म पुण्यदम् । षष्ठोऽयमुदितः स्कंधोव्यासेन परिपोषणे ॥ १२ ॥
vṛtrākhyānaṃ tataḥ paścānmarutāṃ janma puṇyadam | ṣaṣṭho'yamuditaḥ skaṃdhovyāsena paripoṣaṇe || 12 ||
Suta (narrating the Anukramanika/sectional summary, traditionally to the sages at Naimisharanya)
Vrata: none
Primary Rasa: vira
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
It functions as an index-verse: it points to sacred narratives (Vṛtra and the Maruts) as merit-giving (puṇyada) and frames them within Vyāsa’s purposive organization of the Purāṇa into Skandhas for sustaining dharma and right understanding.
Indirectly: by highlighting that Purāṇic kathā (sacred narration) itself is puṇyada, it supports the Bhakti framework where hearing and remembering divine-centered histories becomes a means of purification and devotion.
The verse is primarily an Anukramanika (table-of-contents) marker rather than a Vedāṅga lesson; its practical takeaway is textual organization—how Vyāsa structures topics (skandha-wise) for systematic study and recitation.
