(शशाड्करूपं बीभत्सु: प्राध्यापयदरिंदम: । शड्खशब्दो<स्य सोउत्यर्थ श्रूयते कालमेघवत् ।।
vaiśampāyana uvāca |
śaśāṅkarūpaṃ bībhatsuḥ prādhmāpayad arindamaḥ |
śaṅkhaśabdo 'sya sautyarthaṃ śrūyate kālameghavat ||
tasya śaṅkhasya śabdena dhanuṣo nisvanena ca |
vānarasya ca nādena rathanemisvanena ca ||
jaṅgamasyāpi bhayaṃ ghoram akarot pākaśāsaniḥ |
tatas te javanā dhuryā jānubhyām agaman mahīm |
uttaraś cāpi saṃtrasto rathopastha upāviśat ||
Vaiśampāyana sprach: Arjuna, der Bezwinger der Feinde, blies in seine große Muschel, hell wie der Mond. Ihr mächtiger Klang rollte wie das Donnern der Regenwolken. Durch den Ruf der Muschel, das Schnarren des Bogens, das Brüllen des Affenzeichens auf dem Banner (Hanumān) und das Dröhnen der Wagenräder ließ der Sohn Indras in den Herzen aller sich regenden Wesen schreckliche Furcht aufsteigen. Da sanken selbst die schnellen, ins Joch gespannten Pferde auf die Knie; und Uttara, von Schrecken geschüttelt, setzte sich, wie gelähmt, auf den erhöhten Sitz des Wagens.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Righteous confidence and disciplined readiness can break the enemy’s morale: Arjuna’s controlled display—conch, bow, standard, and chariot—creates fear not by cruelty but by unmistakable capability, reminding that inner steadiness and dharmic purpose often decide outcomes before weapons do.
As the battle situation escalates in Virāṭa’s context, Arjuna signals and asserts his presence by blowing a brilliant conch; the combined martial sounds terrify beings, the horses drop to their knees, and the young prince Uttara, overwhelmed, sits down in fear on the chariot.
