Virāṭa-parva Adhyāya 42 — Duryodhana’s counsel to Bhīṣma on ajñātavāsa risk and raid strategy
विपाठा: पृथव: कस्य गार्ध्रपत्रा: शिलाशिता: । हारिद्रवर्णा: सुमुखा: पीता: सर्वायसा: शरा:,ये जो सोनेके तरकसमें सहस्रों नाराच रखे हुए हैं, जिनके सब ओर विशेषत: अग्रभागमें सोनेका पानी चढ़ा है और जो सबके सब पंखवाले हैं, ये किसके उपयोगमें आते हैं? ये मोटे-मोटे विपाठ (स्थूल दण्डवाले बाणविशेष) किसके हैं? इनमें गीधकी पाँखें लगी हुई हैं। इन बाणोंको पत्थरपर रगड़कर तेज किया गया है। इनके रंग हल्दीके समान हैं और अग्रभाग बहुत ही सुन्दर हैं। कारीगरने इनपर भी खूब पानी चढ़ाया है। ये सबके सब लोहेके ही बाण हैं (अर्थात् इनमें नीचे काठका डंडा नहीं लगा है)
uttara uvāca | vipāṭhāḥ pṛthavaḥ kasya gārdhrapatrāḥ śilāśitāḥ | hāridravarṇāḥ sumukhāḥ pītāḥ sarvāyasāḥ śarāḥ ||
Uttara sagte: „Wem gehören diese breiten, schwer geschäfteten Pfeile—mit Geierfedern befiedert und am Stein geschärft? Sie sind kurkumafarben, haben wohlgeformte Spitzen, wirken vergoldet; und allesamt sind es Eisenpfeile. Für wessen Gebrauch sind sie bestimmt?“
