Dhaumya’s Counsel on Incognito Conduct in a Royal Household
yasya kopo mahābādhaḥ prasādaś ca mahāphalaḥ | kas tasya manasāpi icched anarthaṃ prājña-sammataḥ ||
„Wessen Zorn schweres Unheil heraufbeschwört und wessen Gunst großen Lohn verleiht — welcher Weise würde, selbst im Gedanken, einem solchen König schaden wollen?“
The verse teaches practical dharma: a wise person restrains even hostile thoughts toward a powerful ruler whose anger can cause severe harm and whose favor can grant great benefit. Prudence and ethical self-control are presented as marks of wisdom.
Dhaumya is advising in a courtly-political context, emphasizing the king’s capacity to punish or reward. The statement functions as counsel: do not invite disaster by opposing such a ruler, even mentally.
