विराट उवाच ददामि यानानि धन निवेशनं ममाश्वसूतो भवितु त्वमहसि । कुतो5सि कस्यासि कथं त्वमागत: प्रत्रूहि शिल्पं तव विद्यते च यत्,विराटने कहा--भद्र पुरुष! मैं तुम्हें सवारी, धन और रहनेके लिये घर देता हूँ। तुम मेरे घोड़ोंको शिक्षा देनेवाले सारथि हो सकते हो, किंतु मैं पहले यह जानना चाहता हूँ कि तुम कहाँसे आये हो? किसके पुत्र हो और किसलिये तुम्हारा यहाँ आगमन हुआ है? तुममें जो कला-कौशल हो, उसे भी बताओ
virāṭa uvāca | dadāmi yānāni dhana-niveśanaṃ mamāśvasūto bhavitu tvam arhasi | kuto 'si kasyāsi kathaṃ tvam āgataḥ prabrūhi śilpaṃ tava vidyate ca yat |
Virāṭa sprach: „Guter Mann, ich gewähre dir Reittiere, Reichtum und eine Wohnung in meinem Haus. Du bist geeignet, mein Pferdetrainer und Wagenlenker zu werden. Doch zuerst möchte ich wissen: Woher bist du gekommen, wessen Sohn bist du, und zu welchem Zweck bist du hierher gelangt? Sage mir auch, welches Handwerk oder welche Kunstfertigkeit du besitzt.“
