Draupadī’s Lament and Theodicy: Dharma, Dice, and Īśvara’s Governance (Āraṇyaka-parva 31)

Educational Q&A

The verse warns that relying only on one’s own intellect and on what is immediately perceptible leads to arrogance and contempt for dharma and the counsel of the wise; attachment to sense-pleasures narrows one’s view of reality and produces delusion about subtler, unseen truths.

In the Vana Parva dialogue context, Yudhiṣṭhira reflects on moral and spiritual discernment, criticizing the mindset of those who dismiss higher good and dharma because they accept only the sensory, publicly visible world as real.
