Educational Q&A

The verse emphasizes dharmic completion of sacred observances: when a recitation or vow reaches its formal conclusion (pāraṇa), one should perform the rite properly and express reverence through appropriate offerings—here, serving pāyasa—linking learning/recitation with generosity and disciplined ritual conduct.

Vaiśampāyana is describing prescribed practices connected with sacred recitations/occasions, stating that during the Harivaṁśa-related parvan as well, pāyasa should be served, and that at every pāraṇa the procedure should be carried out correctly, addressing the listener as ‘O King’ and ‘best of the Bharatas’.
