Bhīṣma highlights the impermanence of worldly relationships: people become attached to spouse and kin, but no one secures an absolute, permanent togetherness. This supports a dharmic ethic of measured attachment and inner detachment.
In Śānti Parva’s instruction, Bhīṣma is advising about the nature of human bonds and the limits of worldly companionship, steering the listener toward discernment and non-clinging amid family life.
