Janaka’s Instruction on Steadfast Battle-Conduct

Educational Q&A

External sameness of the body does not determine honor; inner courage does. Cowardice leads to social and moral disgrace, and fear makes the timid dependent on the protection of the brave.

In Bhishma’s instruction discourse in the Shanti Parva, he contrasts the brave and the coward: despite identical physical capacities, the coward meets humiliation and, when frightened, repeatedly bows and seeks shelter with heroic men.
