A righteous death—especially in the line of duty or in austere conditions—is portrayed as a sacred offering comparable to completing great Vedic sacrifices, leading to honor and exalted merit.
Sañjaya is describing the moral valuation of a warrior’s death: whether one dies in the forest or in battle, such self-surrender is treated as the culmination of great ritual merit and results in attaining glory.
