Śiva-stavarāja: Upamanyu’s Preface and Initiation of the Śarva-Nāma Enumeration
Anuśāsana-parva 17
The verse presents a single sacred teaching/practice as complete in itself: it is meditation (dhyāna), disciplined yoga (yoga), the supreme focus of contemplation (dhyeya), a mantra fit for repeated recitation (japa), true liberating knowledge (jñāna), and an exalted esoteric secret (rahasya). The ethical implication is that inner discipline and devotion, grounded in right understanding, are central to dharma.
Vāyu-deva is speaking in praise of a revered spiritual formulation—treating it not merely as words but as a holistic path. By stacking identifications (“this is… this is…”), he authoritatively elevates it as the highest contemplative and devotional means, worthy of secrecy and careful transmission.
