Śiva-stavarāja: Upamanyu’s Preface and Initiation of the Śarva-Nāma Enumeration
Anuśāsana-parva 17
The verse frames the ethical-religious value of reverent speech: divine praise (stuti) is offered with permission and humility, and the recitation/hearing of sacred names is presented as a disciplined devotional act that orients the listener toward the eternal, all-encompassing source of the cosmos.
Vāyudeva addresses Kṛṣṇa, stating that after receiving consent he praised the deity, and now he will transmit a name-compendium of Bhagavān Śiva as originally spoken by the Lotus-born Brahmā (the Grandsire), introducing an extensive litany of Śiva’s epithets.
