स वरैश्छन्दितस्तेन नूपो वचनमत्रवीत्‌ । सहस्रबाहुर्भूयां वै चमूमध्ये गृहेडन्यथा

sa varaiś chanditas tena nūpo vacanam abravīt | sahasrabāhur bhūyāṃ vai camūmadhye gṛhe ’nyathā ||

Bhishma sprach: Von jenem Weisen gedrängt, Gaben zu wählen, erwiderte der König: „Möge ich im Kampf, mitten im Heer, tausendarmig werden, doch daheim anders bleiben (mit nur zwei Armen). Alle Krieger auf dem Schlachtfeld sollen meine tausend Arme erblicken.“
