Sāma (Sāntva) and Dāna: The Brāhmaṇa’s Conciliatory Release from a Rākṣasa

maitreya uvāca | āpa śuddhacittāḥ, tasmāt bhavatāṃ samāgamena mama ayaṃ mahān lābhaḥ prāptaḥ | etad ahaṃ samṛddhiśālinaḥ tapasaḥ mahārṣeḥ samānabuddhyā bāraṃbāraṃ vicārya pratyakṣaṃ paśyāmi || api no darśanād eva bhavato ’bhyudayo bhavet | manye bhavatprasādo ’yaṃ; tad dhi karma svabhāvataḥ ||

Educational Q&A

Association with the pure-minded and the grace (prasāda) of the virtuous are themselves sources of uplift (abhyudaya). The verse emphasizes humility and the ethical idea that good outcomes can arise naturally through contact with sanctity and benevolence.

Maitreya addresses a revered figure, expressing that merely meeting and receiving their audience is a great gain. He states that he has reflected on this repeatedly and sees directly that such darśana can bring welfare, attributing the resulting auspiciousness to the other’s grace.
