Educational Q&A

The verse upholds an ethical ideal of kingship: rulers are praised not merely for power but for sattva—steadfast courage, self-control, and noble character—so elevated that they are likened to divine seers. It implies that true royal greatness is measured by virtue aligned with dharma.

Vaiśampāyana is describing the excellence of Bharata’s lineage, emphasizing that many kings in that dynasty were exceptionally virtuous and powerful, comparable to devarṣis. This functions as laudatory background within the genealogical and dynastic narration of the Ādi Parva.
