The verse frames the Mahābhārata as a sacred narrative that uplifts: it honors exemplary beings—gods and sages—and emphasizes moral purification (dhūta-pāpmānaḥ). It also establishes devotion and reverent remembrance of Keśava (Kṛṣṇa) as integral to the text’s ethical-spiritual purpose.
Vaiśampāyana is describing the scope and sanctity of the Mahābhārata’s contents: it contains accounts of divine and saintly figures and explicitly includes the glorification of Kṛṣṇa, indicating that the work is not merely historical but also spiritually edifying.
