Ādi-parva Adhyāya 33: Vāsuki’s Council on Averting the Sarpa-satra
तदुत्सृष्टमभिप्रेक्ष्य तस्य पर्णमनुत्तमम् । हृष्टानि सर्वभूतानि नाम चक्रुर्गरुत्मत:,उस गिरे हुए परम उत्तम पंखको देखकर सब प्राणियोंको बड़ा हर्ष हुआ और उसीके आधारपर उन्होंने गरुडका नामकरण किया
tad utsṛṣṭam abhiprekṣya tasya parṇam anuttamam | hṛṣṭāni sarvabhūtāni nāma cakrur garutmataḥ ||
Als sie jene überaus vortreffliche Feder sahen, die er von sich geworfen hatte, wurden alle Wesen von Freude erfüllt; und eben diese Tat zum Anlass nehmend, verliehen sie ihm den Namen „Garuḍmān“ — „der Geflügelte“.
