Educational Q&A

The verse underscores that disciplined asceticism and strict vows (vrata) can generate formidable potency, but the moral weight depends on the aim: directing spiritual power toward rivalry and fear reveals the ethical tension between self-control and the intention motivating it.

Śaunaka reports that vow-observant sages form a resolve that a new Indra should arise—endowed with wish-driven prowess and freedom of movement—who would threaten the current lord of the gods, indicating a plotline of ascetic power challenging divine authority.
