Garuḍa’s Inquiry on Permissible Prey and Vinatā’s Counsel (ब्राह्मणावध्यता–उपदेशः)
तस्माललोकविनाशाय संतापयत भास्कर: । ततो देवानुपागम्य प्रोचुरेवं महर्षय:,और वहींसे सूर्यदेवने सम्पूर्ण जगत्का विनाश करनेके लिये सबको संताप देना आरम्भ किया। तब महर्षिगण देवताओंके पास जाकर इस प्रकार बोले--
tasmāl lokavināśāya santāpayat bhāskaraḥ | tato devān upāgamya procurevaṃ maharṣayaḥ |
So begann Bhāskara — die Sonne — in der Absicht, die Welt zu vernichten, alle Wesen mit drückender Glut zu versengen. Da traten die großen Seher zu den Göttern und sprachen folgendermaßen—
युपर्ण उवाच
Unchecked destructive force—even when arising from a divine power—threatens the stability of the worlds; therefore sages and gods must act to preserve loka-saṃgraha (the holding-together of the world) and re-establish balance in accordance with dharma.
The Sun-god begins to scorch the world with the aim (or effect) of world-destruction. Alarmed, the great seers go to the gods and address them, initiating a divine consultation to prevent catastrophe.
