Educational Q&A

The verse emphasizes dharma as the guiding principle in resolving questions of lineage and custody: rightful inheritance must be honored, and the vulnerable—especially a child tied to multiple lineages—must be protected without neglecting ethical obligations.

Vaiśampāyana states that the child is legally/ethically the heir of Citravāhana, while also being a cherished continuation of the Paurava line and beloved to the Pāṇḍavas; hence an instruction is given that he should be safeguarded and cared for at all times.
