Adhyāya 203 — Tilottamā-sṛṣṭiḥ

Creation and Commissioning of Tilottamā

Educational Q&A

The verse emphasizes the primacy of what is ‘vihita’ (ordained): if sovereignty is destined, it will manifest; if not, mere exertion cannot force it. Ethically, it frames political success as contingent on a larger moral-cosmic order, cautioning against overreliance on personal striving alone.

Karna addresses a king (‘viśāmpate’) and argues that the rise or retention of kingship depends on destiny. He presents a counsel-like reflection: public outcomes (like gaining a kingdom) will occur openly if fated, and will not occur even with effort if unfated.
