Kuntī’s Benediction to Draupadī and the Alliance Gifts

Educational Q&A

One should prioritize dharmic duties—ritual offering (bali) and hospitality/charity to a brāhmaṇa—before consuming food oneself. The ‘first portion’ symbolizes placing sacred obligation and social responsibility ahead of personal enjoyment.

Vaiśampāyana narrates that Kuntī speaks to Draupadī at the appropriate moment, instructing her to set aside the first share of food for offerings and to give alms/food to a brāhmaṇa, reflecting proper domestic conduct.
