The Ritual Formalization of Draupadī’s Marriage
तेषां तु द्रौपदी दृष्टवा सर्वेषाममितौजसाम् | सम्प्रमथ्येन्द्रियग्रामं प्रादुरासीन््मनो भव:,द्रपदकुमारीपर दृष्टि पड़ते ही उन सभी अमिततेजस्वी पाण्घुपुत्रोंकी सम्पूर्ण इन्द्रियोंको मथकर मन्मथ प्रकट हो गया
teṣāṁ tu draupadīṁ dṛṣṭvā sarveṣām amitaujasām | sampramathyendriyagrāmaṁ prādurāsīn mano-bhavaḥ ||
Vaiśampāyana sprach: Doch als jene Söhne Pāṇḍus von unermesslicher Kraft Draupadī erblickten, wurde das ganze Heer ihrer Sinne aufgewühlt und erschüttert; und Manobhava—Kāma, der geistgeborene Gott der Liebe—trat machtvoll in ihnen hervor.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Even the strongest and most disciplined can be shaken by sudden attraction; the episode highlights the ethical need for indriya-nigraha (restraint of the senses) so that desire does not override discernment and dharma.
As the Pāṇḍavas see Draupadī, their senses are powerfully stirred; the poet personifies this surge of attraction as the appearance of Manobhava (Kāma), signaling the beginning of romantic and marital destiny within the svayaṁvara context.
