आदि पर्व — अध्याय 148: कुन्ती–ब्राह्मणसंवादः (दुःखमूल-प्रश्नः) / Kuntī and the Brahmin: Inquiry into the Root of Suffering
वैशम्पायन उवाच एवं ते विलपन्ति सम वारणावतका जना: । परिवार्य गृहं तच्च तस्थू रात्रौी समन््ततः,वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं--जनमेजय! इस प्रकार वारणावतके लोग विलाप करने लगे। वे रातभर उस घरको चारों ओरसे घेरकर खड़े रहे
Vaiśampāyana uvāca: evaṃ te vilapantaḥ sama Vāraṇāvatakā janāḥ | parivārya gṛhaṃ tac ca tasthuḥ rātrau samantataḥ ||
Vaiśampāyana sprach: „So klagten die Menschen von Vāraṇāvata. Sie umringten jenes Haus von allen Seiten und standen dort die ganze Nacht hindurch.“
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights communal compassion and the moral weight of apparent catastrophe: society responds to perceived loss with collective mourning and vigilance, underscoring how actions that endanger others disturb the ethical fabric of a community.
After the calamity connected with the house at Vāraṇāvata, the townspeople begin wailing. They encircle the house and remain stationed around it throughout the night, reacting as witnesses to what they believe is a devastating event.
