Vāraṇāvata-prasaṃsā and the Pāṇḍavas’ Departure (वरणावत-प्रशंसा तथा पाण्डव-प्रयाणम्)
अभ्यागच्छ॑ कुरून् भीष्म शिष्यैरर्थी गुणान्वितै: । ततो<हं भवतः काम॑ संवर्धयितुमागत:
abhyāgaccha kurūn bhīṣma śiṣyair arthī guṇānvitaiḥ | tato 'haṃ bhavataḥ kāmaṃ saṃvardhayitum āgataḥ ||
«Komm zu den Kurus, o Bhīṣma, begleitet von würdigen Schülern, die nach Unterweisung verlangen und mit guten Eigenschaften begabt sind. Darum bin ich gekommen: um deinen Wunsch (deinen Zweck) zu erfüllen und weiter zu fördern.»
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Learning and counsel should be sought in the company of qualified, virtuous students; the verse highlights the ethical ideal that instruction and guidance flourish when seekers possess guṇa (good qualities) and sincere purpose.
Vaiśampāyana addresses Bhīṣma, urging him to approach the Kurus with capable disciples who are earnest seekers, and states that he himself has come in order to fulfill and advance Bhīṣma’s intended purpose.
