Ruru–Ḍuṇḍubha Saṃvāda: Śāpa, Mokṣa, and Ahiṃsā-Upadeśa

Chapter 11

Educational Q&A

Even actions done ‘in jest’ can carry real moral and karmic consequences, especially when they harm or disrespect a person of spiritual discipline. The passage also underscores the Mahābhārata theme that a spoken word—particularly a solemn utterance like a curse—binds the speaker to truth and cannot be casually revoked.

Duṇḍrubha, frightened after realizing the ascetic’s power, approaches him with humility—bowing and joining his palms—and admits he acted rashly as a prank. He begs forgiveness and asks that the curse be taken back. The ascetic, however, insists that what he has spoken cannot become untrue.
