Ādi Parva, Adhyāya 103 — Dhṛtarāṣṭra–Gāndhārī Vivāha: Proposal, Consent, and the Vow

आर्ष विधि पुरस्कृत्य दारान्‌ विन्दन्ति चापरे । अष्टमं तमथो वित्त विवाहं कविभिर्वृतम्‌,“कुछ लोग आर्ष विधि (यज्ञ) करके ऋत्विजको कन्या देते हैं। इस प्रकार विवाहित होनेवाले (दैव विवाहकी रीतिसे) पत्नी प्राप्त करते हैं। इस तरह विद्दवानोंने यह विवाहका आठवाँ प्रकार माना है। इन सबको तुमलोग समझो

ārṣa-vidhiṁ puraskṛtya dārān vindanti cāpare | aṣṭamaṁ tam atho vitta vivāhaṁ kavibhir vṛtam ||

Vaiśampāyana sprach: „Manche, indem sie den von den Ṛṣi gebilligten Ritus voranstellen, erlangen eine Frau, indem sie die Jungfrau dem opfernden Priester als Opferlohn geben. Diese Form der Ehe—von den Gelehrten als die achte anerkannt—sollt ihr alle verstehen.“
