Chapter 65 — सभास्थापनकथनं

Account of Establishing an Assembly-hall

Lord Agni (traditional Agni Purāṇa narrator) describing a Garga-based computational convention

Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Jyotisha","secondary_vidya":"Vastu","practical_application":"A remainder-based computational rule using star/constellation symbolism (Saptārciṣ/Kṛttikā) and an eightfold division to name/quantify ‘vyaya’ (loss/deficit) for planning or prognostic allocation.","sutra_style":true}

Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Procedure","entry_title":"Garga-vidyā: Saptārciṣ-hṛta Bhāga and Aṣṭa-vibhāga to Determine Vyaya","lookup_keywords":["saptarcis","krittika","garga-vidya","ashtadha-bhajita","vyaya"],"quick_summary":"After removing a portion by the ‘Seven-rayed’ factor, divide what remains into eight; the final residue is designated ‘vyaya’, a computed deficit used for decision-making."}

Concept: Naming and managing ‘vyaya’ through rule-governed computation; cosmic markers (nakṣatra symbolism) are used as mnemonic operators in applied calculation.

Application: Use remainder arithmetic (mod-style thinking): apply the ‘7’ operation, then divide by 8; treat the leftover as the actionable ‘loss’ parameter in planning/ritual allocation.

Khanda Section: Jyotisha / Chandas–Ganita (Astral calculation and metrical–numerical procedure)

Primary Rasa: adbhuta

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A scholar of Garga’s science removes a ‘seven-rayed’ portion from a heap, then divides the remainder into eight piles; the leftover pebble(s) are labeled ‘vyaya’.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural, stylized seven rays above a heap, guru dividing into eight neat piles, remaining pebble glowing as ‘vyaya’, traditional red-ochre palette.","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting, gold rays (seven) striking a mound of counters, eight compartments around, the residue highlighted with gold embossing, devotional-scientific aesthetic.","mysore_prompt":"Mysore style, clean didactic diagram: step 1 subtract/‘take away’ by 7, step 2 divide by 8, step 3 mark residue as vyaya; fine lines and labels.","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature, astronomer-mathematician with star chart of Kṛttikā, counting stones into eight bowls, recording the residue on a scroll."}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"contemplative","suggested_raga":"Hamsadhwani","pace":"medium","voice_tone":"instructional"}

Sandhi Resolution Notes: yaccheṣaṃ → yat śeṣam.

FAQs

It gives a technical computational convention attributed to Garga: after subtracting a quantity associated with Saptārciṣ (Kṛttikā), divide by eight; the leftover residue is designated ‘vyaya’ (loss/deficit) for further calendrical/astral reckoning.

Beyond myth and worship, it preserves applied scientific material—astral arithmetic and named remainders—showing the Agni Purāṇa’s role as a compendium that includes jyotiṣa-style computation alongside theology and ritual.

While primarily technical, accurate jyotiṣa computation traditionally supports correct timing (muhūrta, vrata, and rites), thereby aligning actions with dharma and minimizing ‘vyaya’—loss arising from improperly timed observances.
