Sandhi Resolution Notes: अग्निर् उवाच = agniḥ + uvāca (visarga before vowel becomes r). वक्ष्ये ऽहं = vakṣye + aham (e + a → e ’a, written ’). duṣṭa-naṣṭyai is treated as a tatpuruṣa compound; manuscript hyphen indicates split/line-break.
Related Themes: Agni Purāṇa 1.18 (avatāra-hetu promised); Agni Purāṇa 2.1 (request for matsyādi narration)
It imparts avatāra-tattva: the doctrinal purpose of Viṣṇu’s incarnations—destroying adharmic forces and safeguarding dharmic people—serving as the framework for the Matsya-avatāra narrative.
It establishes a thematic gateway into the Purana’s systematic treatment of subjects through avatāra-kathā—using divine history as a structured lens for dharma, cosmology, and ethical governance (protection of the righteous and restraint of the wicked).
Hearing and understanding the avatāra’s purpose reinforces dharmic orientation: aligning one’s actions with protection of the good (sat) and rejection of wickedness (duṣṭa), which is presented as spiritually purifying and merit-producing (puṇya).
