nāgā ūcuḥ | bhogānapi prabhuṃjānā na vayaṃ tatra padmaja | śaknumo vastumurvyāṃ nastasmātsthānaṃ pradarśaya | maryādayā vartayāmo yatrasthā mānavaiḥ samam
Nāgas
Listener: Sages (frame); internal: Brahmā (Padmajā) addressed by nāgas
Scene: Nāga chiefs speak with folded hands to the Lotus-born (Brahmā): they acknowledge pleasures but request a rightful place on earth to live alongside humans within due bounds.
True dharma is living within maryādā—right limits—so that different beings can coexist without harm.
This request sets up the later designation of a specific kṣetra for Nāgas on earth—identified shortly as Cāmatkārapura.
No ritual is prescribed; the verse emphasizes ethical restraint and a sanctioned place of residence.
