Sukta 10.29

Devata

Indra (dual address implied by vām; companion devatā not recoverable from isolated verse)

Chandas

Trishtubh (probable; confirm by metrical count)

Inside Sukta 29

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A ‘pure, eager’ hymn is set forth, stirring the strong ones; Indra is framed as a long-enduring priestly ally who brings light through night.

  2. Development

The hymn deepens into the economy of exchange: seekers move toward Indra’s desire, and his ancient words are learned back through nourishments—speech and offering mutually intensify.

  3. Climax

Indra’s sovereign power is declared: by his own force he spreads out the battles, and the primordial powers strive toward him for comradeship; he is asked to stand firm like a chariot amid conflict.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn resolves in guidance and blessing: Indra is impelled forward by bhadrā sumati—right-minded, auspicious clarity—granting victory, steadiness, and illumination.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is invoked as naryaḥ and nṛtamaḥ—manly, most victorious—who becomes the effective hotṛ for men over many days, and who spreads out battles by his own strength. He is stirred by the stoma and responds to ancient words (giraḥ pūrvīḥ) through the exchange of nourishment and praise.
  • Cosmic functionChampion of ṛta in the heroic register: breaker of obstructions, winner of space and light, protector of the clan in conflict, and energizer of the sacrificial economy that sustains cosmic order.
  • Inner significanceIndra signifies awakened will and courageous intelligence that cuts through inertia and fear; he is the power that “calls the Light” through inner night, stabilizing the seeker like a chariot amid life’s battles when guided by auspicious right-mindedness (sumati).
