Prakarana 16

सोपान-प्रवेश: ‘भक्ति का जन्म’ और ‘संशय-निवृत्ति’। बालकाण्ड में जगत-इतिहास और अवतार-कारण एक साथ रखकर तुलसी यह दिखाते हैं कि मुक्ति का प्रथम पायदान है—भगवत्-प्रतिज्ञा पर भरोसा, तथा भोग/राज्य/वरदान को भी ‘चरण-रति’ में रूपान्तरित कर देना। यहाँ दम्पति (सतरूपा–मनु) का वर-प्रार्थन प्रसंग साधक को सिखाता है कि सर्वोच्च वर है—विवेक, भक्ति, और चरण-स्नेह; बाकी सब उसी के अधीन हैं।

এই খণ্ডাংশে রসের কেন্দ্র ‘শান্ত’ ও ‘করুণ’, যার ভিতরে ‘অদ্ভুত’ (অবতার-প্রতিজ্ঞা)-এর দীপ্তি আছে। শতরূপার বিনয়যুক্ত দৃঢ়তা—“তুমি ব্রহ্মাদি জনক”—ভক্তের অন্তরে ওঠা ধর্মসম্মত সংশয়কে রূপ দেয়: সর্বসমর্থ প্রভু কি সত্যিই ‘নিজ-ভক্ত-হিত’ জন্য পুত্র হবেন? তুলসী এখানে নির্গুণ-ব্রহ্মের সর্বব্যাপকতা (অন্তর্যামী)কে সগুণ-লীলা-প্রতিশ্রুতি (এবমস্তু)র সঙ্গে যুক্ত করেন। ‘মণি বিনা ফণি/জল বিনা মীনা’ প্রভৃতি উপমানে প্রাণ-আশ্রয়ের ভাব তীব্র হয়—জীবনের অর্থ প্রভু-আশ্রয়। এরপর প্রতাপভানু-প্রসঙ্গের সূচনা ‘ইতিহাস’ হয়ে আসে: রাজ্য-বৈভব, দান, ধর্ম, তারপর মৃগয়া-ভ্রম—দেখাতে যে কেবল নীতি/কর্ম যথেষ্ট নয়; বিবেকহীন অহংকার পতনের কারণ। এভাবে বালকাণ্ডের এই অংশ সাধককে প্রথম পাদানে স্থির করে: বরদানও তখনই কল্যাণকর, যখন তা ভক্তি-বিবেকে পরিণত হয়।

Verse 318 (दोहा/सोरठा)

तहँ करि भोग बिसाल तात गउँ कछु काल पुनि। होइहहु अवध भुआल तब मैं होब तुम्हार सुत।।151।।

tahā̃ kari bhoga bisāla tāta gaũ kachu kāla puni | hoihahu avadha bhuāla taba maĩ hoba tumhāra suta ||151||

“সেখানে কিছু কাল অঢেল সুখ ভোগ করিয়া, প্রিয় পিতা, আমি আবার যাইব। যখন আপনি অযোধ্যার রাজা হইবেন, তখন আমি আপনার পুত্র হইব।”

इच्छामय नरबेष सँवारें। होइहउँ प्रगट निकेत तुम्हारे।। अंसन्ह सहित देह धरि ताता। करिहउँ चरित भगत सुखदाता।। जे सुनि सादर नर बड़भागी। भव तरिहहिं ममता मद त्यागी।। आदिसक्ति जेहिं जग उपजाया। सोउ अवतरिहि मोरि यह माया।। पुरउब मैं अभिलाष तुम्हारा। सत्य सत्य पन सत्य हमारा।। पुनि पुनि अस कहि कृपानिधाना। अंतरधान भए भगवाना।। दंपति उर धरि भगत कृपाला। तेहिं आश्रम निवसे कछु काला।। समय पाइ तनु तजि अनयासा। जाइ कीन्ह अमरावति बासा।।

icchāmaya narabeṣa saṁvāreṁ | hoihaũ pragaṭa niketa tumhāre || aṁsanha sahita deha dhari tātā | karihaũ carita bhagata sukhadātā || je suni sādara nara baṛabhāgī | bhava tarihahiṁ mamatā mada tyāgī || ādisakti jehiṁ jaga upajāyā | sou avatarihi mori yaha māyā || purauba maiṁ abhilāṣa tumhārā | satya satya pana satya hamārā || puni puni asa kahi kṛpānidhānā | antaradhāna bhae bhagavānā || daṁpati ura dhari bhagata kṛpālā | tehiṁ āśrama nivase kachu kālā || samaya pāi tanu taji anayāsā | jāi kīnha amarāvati bāsā ||

“Assuming a well-fashioned human guise by Mine own will, I shall appear—O beloved—within thy very dwelling. Taking a body together with My due divine portions, I shall enact deeds that bestow delight upon My devotees. Those greatly fortunate men who hear these acts with reverence shall cross the ocean of becoming, casting away possessive attachment and the intoxication of pride. That primal Power by which the world was brought forth—she too shall descend; such is this My māyā. I shall fulfill thy desire. True, true—My vow is true; and true is My pledged word.” Saying thus again and again, the Treasure of compassion, the Lord, withdrew from sight. The pious couple, cherishing the gracious devotee within their hearts, dwelt for some time in that hermitage. And when the hour came, they left the body without distress, and went to make their abode in Amarāvatī.

यह इतिहास पुनीत अति उमहि कही बृषकेतु। भरद्वाज सुनु अपर पुनि राम जनम कर हेतु।।152।।

এই পরম পবিত্র ইতিহাস বৃষকেতু (শিব) উমাকে বর্ণনা করিয়াছেন। এখন, হে ভারদ্বাজ, আরও শুন; আমি রামের অবতারের কারণ ও উদ্দেশ্য বলিতেছি।

सुनु मुनि कथा पुनीत पुरानी। जो गिरिजा प्रति संभु बखानी।। बिस्व बिदित एक कैकय देसू। सत्यकेतु तहँ बसइ नरेसू।। धरम धुरंधर नीति निधाना। तेज प्रताप सील बलवाना।। तेहि कें भए जुगल सुत बीरा। सब गुन धाम महा रनधीरा।। राज धनी जो जेठ सुत आही। नाम प्रतापभानु अस ताही।। अपर सुतहि अरिमर्दन नामा। भुजबल अतुल अचल संग्रामा।। भाइहि भाइहि परम समीती। सकल दोष छल बरजित प्रीती।। जेठे सुतहि राज नृप दीन्हा। हरि हित आपु गवन बन कीन्हा।।

Listen, O sage, to this ancient tale that purifies—such as Shambhu related to Girija. There was a realm famed in all the world, the land of Kekaya; there King Satyaketu dwelt. A champion of dharma, a very treasury of wise policy—mighty in splendor and renown, rich in courtesy and strength. To him were born two heroic sons, abodes of every excellence, great and steadfast in the press of war. The elder, fit to bear the burden of rule, was named Pratāpbhānu. The other son was called Arimardan—his arm’s might incomparable, unshaken in battle. Between the brothers there was perfect harmony: a love from which all fault and all deceit were barred. The king bestowed the kingdom upon the elder son; and the younger, for Hari’s sake, himself went forth to the forest.

Verse 322 (दोहा/सोरठा)

जब प्रतापरबि भयउ नृप फिरी दोहाई देस। प्रजा पाल अति बेदबिधि कतहुँ नहीं अघ लेस।।153।।

jaba pratāpa-rabi bhayu nṛpa phirī dohāī desa | prajā pāla ati beda-bidhi katahū̃ nahī̃ agha lesa ||153||

রাজার সূর্যসম প্রতাপ প্রতিষ্ঠিত হতেই দেশে দেশে আবার ঘোষণাধ্বনি উঠিল। তিনি বেদের বিধানমতে কঠোরভাবে প্রজাপালন করিলেন; কোথাও পাপের লেশমাত্রও ছিল না।

नृप हितकारक सचिव सयाना। नाम धरमरुचि सुक्र समाना।। सचिव सयान बंधु बलबीरा। आपु प्रतापपुंज रनधीरा।। सेन संग चतुरंग अपारा। अमित सुभट सब समर जुझारा।। सेन बिलोकि राउ हरषाना। अरु बाजे गहगहे निसाना।। बिजय हेतु कटकई बनाई। सुदिन साधि नृप चलेउ बजाई।। जँह तहँ परीं अनेक लराईं। जीते सकल भूप बरिआई।। सप्त दीप भुजबल बस कीन्हे। लै लै दंड छाड़ि नृप दीन्हें।। सकल अवनि मंडल तेहि काला। एक प्रतापभानु महिपाला।।

nṛpa hitakāraka saciva sayānā | nāma dharmaruci śukra samānā || saciva sayāna bandhu balabīrā | āpu pratāpapuñja raṇadhīrā || sena saṅga caturaṅga apārā | amita subhaṭa saba samara jujhārā || sena biloki rāu haraṣānā | aru bāje gahagahe nisānā || bijaya hetu kaṭakaī banāī | sudina sādhi nṛpa caleu bajāī || jaṁha taṁha parīṁ aneka larāīṁ | jīte sakala bhūpa bariāī || sapta dīpa bhujabala basa kīnhe | lai lai daṇḍa chāḍi nṛpa dīnhe || sakala avani maṇḍala tehi kālā | eka pratāpabhānu mahipālā ||

The king had a prudent minister, a true benefactor of the realm, named Dharamaruchi—one in policy comparable to Shukra. The minister was wise; his kinsman was a mighty hero; and the king himself was a very treasury of splendor, steadfast in battle. With them stood a vast fourfold host, with countless champions, all seasoned fighters in war. Seeing the army, the ruler rejoiced, and the martial signals—drums and trumpets—rang out in clamorous peals. For victory he drew up the divisions of the host; choosing an auspicious day, the king marched forth with the war-music sounding. In many places battles were fought; by sheer superiority he conquered all other kings. By the strength of his arms he brought the seven continents under his sway; taking tribute and then remitting the rod of punishment, he granted kings their leave. At that time, over the whole circle of the earth, there was but one monarch—a sun of valor and majesty.

Verse 324 (दोहा/सोरठा)

स्वबस बिस्व करि बाहुबल निज पुर कीन्ह प्रबेसु। अरथ धरम कामादि सुख सेवइ समयँ नरेसु।।154।।

svabasu bisva kari bāhubala nija pura kīnha prabesu | aratha dharama kāmādi sukha sevai samayaṁ naresu ||154||

ভুজবলের প্রভাবে সমগ্র জগৎকে আপন অধীনে আনিয়া রাজা নিজ রাজধানীতে প্রবেশ করিলেন। অতঃপর যথাকালে ও শাস্ত্রসম্মতভাবে তিনি অর্থ ও ধর্মের সাধন করিলেন, এবং কামাদি বিধিসম্মত ভোগ উপভোগ করিয়া—রাজোচিত সুখ আস্বাদন করিলেন।

भूप प्रतापभानु बल पाई। कामधेनु भै भूमि सुहाई।। सब दुख बरजित प्रजा सुखारी। धरमसील सुंदर नर नारी।। सचिव धरमरुचि हरि पद प्रीती। नृप हित हेतु सिखव नित नीती।। गुर सुर संत पितर महिदेवा। करइ सदा नृप सब कै सेवा।। भूप धरम जे बेद बखाने। सकल करइ सादर सुख माने।। दिन प्रति देह बिबिध बिधि दाना। सुनहु सास्त्र बर बेद पुराना।। नाना बापीं कूप तड़ागा। सुमन बाटिका सुंदर बागा।। बिप्रभवन सुरभवन सुहाए। सब तीरथन्ह बिचित्र बनाए।।

bhūpa pratāpa-bhānu bala pāī. kāma-dhenu bhai bhūmi suhāī.. saba dukha barajita prajā sukhārī. dharama-sīla sundara nara nārī.. saciva dharama-ruci hari-pada prītī. nṛpa-hita hetu sikhava nita nītī.. guru sura santa pitara mahi-devā. karai sadā nṛpa saba kai sevā.. bhūpa dharama je beda bakhāne. sakala karai sādara sukha māne.. dina prati deha bibidha bidhi dānā. sunahu sāstra bara beda purānā.. nānā bāpīṁ kūpa taṛāgā. sumana bāṭikā sundara bāgā.. bipra-bhavana sura-bhavana suhāe. saba tīrathanha bicitra banāe..

The king—sun of prowess—having gained strength, made the earth fair; she became like a wish-yielding cow. All sorrow was barred; the people were happy. Men and women were comely and firm in dharma. The ministers were inclined to righteousness and devoted to Hari’s feet; for the good of the realm they daily taught policy and right conduct. Teachers, gods, saints, ancestors, and the Brahmins—‘gods on earth’—were ever served and honored by the king. The royal dharma that the Vedas proclaim—he practiced it all with reverence, and took delight therein. Day by day he gave gifts in diverse ways, as the excellent scriptures—the Vedas and Purāṇas—enjoin. Many stepwells, wells, and tanks were made; flower-gardens and lovely groves were planted. Fair were the houses endowed for Brahmins and the shrines of the gods; and wondrous sacred pilgrimage-places were established everywhere.

Verse 326 (दोहा/सोरठा)

जँह लगि कहे पुरान श्रुति एक एक सब जाग। बार सहस्त्र सहस्त्र नृप किए सहित अनुराग।।155।।

পুরাণ ও শ্রুতি যতদূর বর্ণনা করে—জগতে প্রচলিত প্রত্যেক কাহিনি অনুযায়ী—বারংবার, সহস্র সহস্রবার রাজারা প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়েছেন; আর তা ভক্তিস্নেহসহ (ধর্ম ও প্রভুর প্রতি অনুরাগে) হয়েই।

हृदयँ न कछु फल अनुसंधाना। भूप बिबेकी परम सुजाना।। करइ जे धरम करम मन बानी। बासुदेव अर्पित नृप ग्यानी।। चढ़ि बर बाजि बार एक राजा। मृगया कर सब साजि समाजा।। बिंध्याचल गभीर बन गयऊ। मृग पुनीत बहु मारत भयऊ।। फिरत बिपिन नृप दीख बराहू। जनु बन दुरेउ ससिहि ग्रसि राहू।। बड़ बिधु नहि समात मुख माहीं। मनहुँ क्रोधबस उगिलत नाहीं।। कोल कराल दसन छबि गाई। तनु बिसाल पीवर अधिकाई।। घुरुघुरात हय आरौ पाएँ। चकित बिलोकत कान उठाएँ।।

hṛdayaṁ na kachu phala anusandhānā. bhūpa bibekī parama sujānā.. karai je dharama karama mana bānī. bāsudeva arpita nṛpa gyānī.. caṛhi bara bāji bāra eka rājā. mṛgayā kara saba sāji samājā.. biṁdhyācala gabhīra bana gayū. mṛga punīta bahu mārat bhayū.. phirata bipina nṛpa dīkha barāhū. janu bana dureu sasi-hi grasi rāhū.. baṛa bidhu nahi samāta mukha māhīṁ. manahuṁ krodha-basa ugilata nāhīṁ.. kola karāla dasana chabi gāī. tanu bisāla pīvara adhikāī.. ghuru-ghurāta haya ārau pāeṁ. cakita bilokata kāna uṭhāeṁ..

In his heart he sought no selfish fruit; the king was discerning and exceedingly wise. Whatever righteous duties he performed—by mind and speech—this knowing ruler offered to Vasudeva. Mounted once upon a noble steed, the king set forth to hunt, with all his gear and retinue. He entered the deep forests of the Vindhya hills, and there he slew many a deer. Roaming the wild, the king beheld a boar—like Rahu in the woods devouring the moon. So huge was that orb that it could not be contained within its mouth, as though, possessed by anger, it would not cease swallowing. Its tusks were dreadful, its form immense and thick-set. It grunted; the horse too stamped its feet, stared in amazement, and pricked up its ears.

Verse 328 (दोहा/सोरठा)

नील महीधर सिखर सम देखि बिसाल बराहु। चपरि चलेउ हय सुटुकि नृप हाँकि न होइ निबाहु।।156।।

nīla mahīdhara śikhara sama dekhi bisāla barāhu | capari caleu haya suṭuki nṛpa hā̃ki na hoi nibāhu ||156||

সেই বিপুল বরাহকে দেখে—শ্যামবর্ণ, যেন মহাপর্বতের শিখর—রাজা তৎক্ষণাৎ ধাবিত হলেন। তিনি ঘোড়াকে তাড়না করিয়া এমন বেগে ছুটিলেন যে সংযম আর রক্ষা করা গেল না।

आवत देखि अधिक रव बाजी। चलेउ बराह मरुत गति भाजी।। तुरत कीन्ह नृप सर संधाना। महि मिलि गयउ बिलोकत बाना।। तकि तकि तीर महीस चलावा। करि छल सुअर सरीर बचावा।। प्रगटत दुरत जाइ मृग भागा। रिस बस भूप चलेउ संग लागा।। गयउ दूरि घन गहन बराहू। जहँ नाहिन गज बाजि निबाहू।। अति अकेल बन बिपुल कलेसू। तदपि न मृग मग तजइ नरेसू।। कोल बिलोकि भूप बड़ धीरा। भागि पैठ गिरिगुहाँ गभीरा।। अगम देखि नृप अति पछिताई। फिरेउ महाबन परेउ भुलाई।।

āvata dekhi adhika rava bājī. caleu barāha maruta gati bhājī.. turata kīnha nṛpa sara saṁdhānā. mahi mili gayau bilokata bānā.. taki-taki tīra mahīsa calāvā. kari chala suara sarīra bacāvā.. pragaṭata durata jāi mṛga bhāgā. risa basa bhūpa caleu saṅga lāgā.. gayau dūri ghana gahana barāhū. jahã nāhina gaja bāji nibāhū.. ati akela bana bipula kalesū. tadapi na mṛga maga tajai naresū.. kola biloki bhūpa baṛa dhīrā. bhāgi paiṭha giriguhā̃ gabhīrā.. agama dekhi nṛpa ati pachitāī. phireu mahābana pareu bhulāī..

Seeing the mounted hunters drawing near with a great din, the boar fled with the speed of the wind. At once the king fitted and aimed an arrow; yet, as he watched it, the shaft struck the ground. Again and again he shot at the mighty beast; by crafty turns the boar saved its body. Then, showing itself only for a moment, the quarry darted away; and the king, mastered by wrath, pursued it close. Far off it went into a dense and gloomy wilderness, where neither elephants nor horses could keep pace. Alone in the forest and in grievous hardship, even so the lord of men would not abandon the beast’s track. Seeing the boar, the resolute king pressed on; but it fled and entered a deep cave in the mountain. Finding it inaccessible, the king greatly repented; he turned back, and in that vast wood fell into bewilderment.

Verse 330 (दोहा/सोरठा)

खेद खिन्न छुद्धित तृषित राजा बाजि समेत। खोजत ब्याकुल सरित सर जल बिनु भयउ अचेत।।157।।

kheda khinna chuddhita tṛṣita rājā bāji sameta | khojata byākula sarita sara jala binu bhayu aceta ||157||

দুঃখে ক্লান্ত, বিষণ্ণ, ক্ষুধা-তৃষ্ণায় কাতর রাজা—ঘোড়াসহ—উদ্বিগ্ন হয়ে চারিদিকে খুঁজিতে লাগিলেন। কিন্তু না নদী, না সরোবর, না জল—কিছুই না পেয়ে শেষে তিনি অচেতন হয়ে পড়িলেন।

फिरत बिपिन आश्रम एक देखा। तहँ बस नृपति कपट मुनिबेषा।। जासु देस नृप लीन्ह छड़ाई। समर सेन तजि गयउ पराई।। समय प्रतापभानु कर जानी। आपन अति असमय अनुमानी।। गयउ न गृह मन बहुत गलानी। मिला न राजहि नृप अभिमानी।। रिस उर मारि रंक जिमि राजा। बिपिन बसइ तापस कें साजा।। तासु समीप गवन नृप कीन्हा। यह प्रतापरबि तेहि तब चीन्हा।। राउ तृषित नहि सो पहिचाना। देखि सुबेष महामुनि जाना।। उतरि तुरग तें कीन्ह प्रनामा। परम चतुर न कहेउ निज नामा।।

Wandering on, he beheld a hermitage in the forest; there dwelt a king, deceitful, wearing the dress of a sage. His realm had been seized by another prince; abandoning his host in battle, he had fled to a чуж land. Knowing that Pratāpabhānu’s hour had come, he deemed his own opportunity most timely. He did not return home; his mind was sore with remorse. The proud king neither regained his kingdom, and, with anger gnawing at his heart, like a pauper who would play the king, he lived in the woods in an ascetic’s guise. The prince drew near to him; then Pratāpa-ravi recognized him. The king, eager and undiscerning, did not know him; seeing the fair garb, he took him for a mighty sage. Dismounting from his horse, he made obeisance; being exceedingly shrewd, he did not disclose his own name.

Verse 332 (दोहा/सोरठा)

भूपति तृषित बिलोकि तेहिं सरबरु दीन्ह देखाइ। मज्जन पान समेत हय कीन्ह नृपति हरषाइ।।158।।

bhūpati tṛṣita biloki tehiṁ sarabaru dīnha dekhāi | majjana pāna sameta haya kīnha nṛpati haraṣāi ||158||

রাজাকে তৃষ্ণায় কাতর দেখে তিনি তাঁকে এক সরোবর দেখালেন। নৃপতি অন্তরে পরম আনন্দিত হয়ে সেখানে স্নান করলেন এবং তৃপ্তি ভরে জল পান করলেন।

गै श्रम सकल सुखी नृप भयऊ। निज आश्रम तापस लै गयऊ।। आसन दीन्ह अस्त रबि जानी। पुनि तापस बोलेउ मृदु बानी।। को तुम्ह कस बन फिरहु अकेलें। सुंदर जुबा जीव परहेलें।। चक्रबर्ति के लच्छन तोरें। देखत दया लागि अति मोरें।। नाम प्रतापभानु अवनीसा। तासु सचिव मैं सुनहु मुनीसा।। फिरत अहेरें परेउँ भुलाई। बडे भाग देखउँ पद आई।। हम कहँ दुर्लभ दरस तुम्हारा। जानत हौं कछु भल होनिहारा।। कह मुनि तात भयउ अँधियारा। जोजन सत्तरि नगरु तुम्हारा।।

gai śrama sakala sukhī nṛpa bhayū. nija āśrama tāpasa lai gayū.. āsana dīnha asta rabi jānī. puni tāpasa boleu mṛdu bānī.. ko tumha kasa bana phirahu akelẽ. sundara jubā jīva parahẽlẽ.. cakrabarti ke lacchana torẽ. dekhata dayā lāgi ati morẽ.. nāma pratāpabhānu avanīsā. tāsu saciva maiṁ sunahu munīsā.. phirata ahērẽ pareuṁ bhulāī. baṛe bhāga dekhuṁ pada āī.. hama kahaँ durlabha darasa tumhārā. jānata hauṁ kachu bhala honihārā.. kaha muni tāta bhayau aँdhiyārā. jojana sattari nagaru tumhārā..

When he had gone a little way, the king’s weariness wholly vanished, and he felt at ease. The ascetic then took him to his own hermitage. Perceiving that the sun was setting, he offered him a seat; and then the hermit spoke in gentle words: “Who are you, and why do you wander alone in the forest—so fair a youth, a living riddle to behold? The marks of a universal monarch are upon you; seeing you, great compassion rises in my heart. Your name, I hear, is Pratāpabhānu, a lord of the earth; and I am his minister—listen, O sage. While hunting I lost my way; by great fortune I have come to your feet. To me your sight is hard to obtain; I know some good is about to come to pass.” The sage said, “Dear child, darkness has fallen; your city is seventy yojanas away.”

Verse 334 (दोहा/सोरठा)

निसा घोर गम्भीर बन पंथ न सुनहु सुजान। बसहु आजु अस जानि तुम्ह जाएहु होत बिहान।।159(क)।। तुलसी जसि भवतब्यता तैसी मिलइ सहाइ। आपुनु आवइ ताहि पहिं ताहि तहाँ लै जाइ।।159(ख)।।

nisā ghora gambhīra bana pantha na sunahu sujāna | basahu āju asa jāni tumha jāehu hota bihāna ||159(ka)|| tulasī jasi bhavatabyatā taisī milai sahāi | āpunu āvai tāhi paiṁ tāhi tahāṁ lai jāi ||159(kha)||

“রাত্রি ভয়ংকর, আর বনপথ গভীর ও বিপদসঙ্কুল—হে বিচক্ষণ, উপদেশ অবহেলা কোরো না। আজ এখানে থাকো; এ কথা জেনে রেখো—প্রভাতে হলে তবে যেতে পারবে। তুলসীদাস বলেন: যেমন কারও ভাগ্য এবং ধর্ম-যোগ্যতা, তেমনই তার সহায়ের সাক্ষাৎ। যোগ্যজনের কাছে সাহায্য আপনিই এসে পৌঁছায়; এসে তাকে যথাস্থানে পৌঁছে দেয়।”

Verse 335 (चौपाई)

भलेहिं नाथ आयसु धरि सीसा। बाँधि तुरग तरु बैठ महीसा।। नृप बहु भाँती प्रसंसेउ ताही। चरन बंदी निज भाग्य सराही।। पुनि बोले मृदु गिरा सुहाई। जानि पिता प्रभु करउँ ढिठाई।। मोहि मुनीस सुत सेवक जानी। नाथ नाम निज कहहु बखानी।। तेहि न जान नृप नृपहि सो जाना। भूप सुह्रद सो कपट सयाना।। बैरी पुनि छत्री पुनि राजा। छल बल कीन्ह चहइ निज काजा।। समुझि राजसुख दुखित अराती। अवाँ अनल इव सुलगइ छाती।। सरल बचन नृप के सुनि काना। बयर सँभारि हृदयँ हरषाना।।

bhalehi nātha āyasu dhari sīsā | bā̃dhi turaga taru baiṭha mahīsā || nṛpa bahu bhā̃tī prasaṁseu tāhī | carana baṁdī nija bhāgya sarāhī || puni bole mṛdu girā suhāī | jāni pitā prabhu karaũ ḍhiṭhāī || mohi munīsa suta sevaka jānī | nātha nāma nija kahahu bakhānī || tehi na jāna nṛpa nṛpahi so jānā | bhūpa suhṛda so kapaṭa sayānā || bairī puni chatrī puni rājā | chala bala kīnha cahai nija kājā || samujhi rāja-sukha dukhita arātī | avā̃ anala iva sulagai chātī || sarala bacana nṛpa ke suni kānā | bayara sãbhāri hṛdayã haraṣānā ||

“Very well, my lord—your command upon my head.” Tethering the horse to a tree, the buffalo-rider sat down. The king praised him in many ways, bowed at his feet, and counted his own fortune blessed. Then, in gentle and pleasing words, he said, “Knowing you to be as a father, O master, I dare to be bold. Deeming me the sage’s son and your servant, O lord, kindly tell me and declare your own name.” The king did not know him; yet he, in truth, knew the king—an apparent friend, but a crafty dissembler. An enemy, and a Kshatriya, and a king besides: by guile and force he sought to accomplish his own ends. Thinking of royal happiness, the foe grew pained; as though by fire, his breast began to burn. Hearing the king’s simple words with his ears, he gathered up his hatred and, within his heart, rejoiced.

Verse 336 (दोहा/सोरठा)

कपट बोरि बानी मृदुल बोलेउ जुगुति समेत। नाम हमार भिखारि अब निर्धन रहित निकेति।।160।।

kapaṭ bori bānī mṛdula boleu juguti sameta | nāma hamāra bhikhāri aba nirdhana rahita niketi ||160||

সমস্ত ছল-কপট ডুবিয়ে তিনি কোমল বাক্যে, যথোচিত কৌশলে বললেন—“আমার নাম ভিক্ষুক; এই মুহূর্ত থেকে আমি দরিদ্র, আর আমার কোনো গৃহ নেই।”

Verse 337 (चौपाई)

कह नृप जे बिग्यान निधाना। तुम्ह सारिखे गलित अभिमाना।। सदा रहहि अपनपौ दुराएँ। सब बिधि कुसल कुबेष बनाएँ।। तेहि तें कहहि संत श्रुति टेरें। परम अकिंचन प्रिय हरि केरें।। तुम्ह सम अधन भिखारि अगेहा। होत बिरंचि सिवहि संदेहा।। जोसि सोसि तव चरन नमामी। मो पर कृपा करिअ अब स्वामी।। सहज प्रीति भूपति कै देखी। आपु बिषय बिस्वास बिसेषी।। सब प्रकार राजहि अपनाई। बोलेउ अधिक सनेह जनाई।। सुनु सतिभाउ कहउँ महिपाला। इहाँ बसत बीते बहु काला।।

kaha nṛpa je bigyāna nidhānā | tumha sārikhē galita abhimānā || sadā rahahi apanapau durāēṁ | saba bidhi kusala ku-bēṣa banāēṁ || tēhi tēṁ kahahi santa śruti ṭērēṁ | parama akiñcana priya hari केरēṁ || tumha sama adhana bhikhāri agēhā | hōta birañci sivahi sandēhā || jōsi-sōsi tava carana namāmī | mō para kṛpā kari-a aba svāmī || sahaja prīti bhūpati kai dēkhī | āpu biṣaya bisvāsa bisēṣī || saba prakāra rājahi apanāī | bōlēu adhika sanēha janāī || sunu satibhāu kahuṁ mahipālā | ihāṁ basata bītē bahu kālā ||

“O King, you are a treasury of discernment; in men like you, pride has already melted away. You ever keep self-display concealed, and by every means you maintain a prudent outward guise. Therefore the saints and the Vedas proclaim: the supremely ‘poor-in-self’ are most dear to Hari. A beggar as destitute and homeless as you—such a one would cast even Brahma and Shiva into doubt! After weighing it well, I bow at your feet; now, my lord, be gracious to me. The king beheld his natural affection and his singular confidence of purpose. In every way he accepted him as his own, and spoke with words that showed even greater love: ‘Listen, O protector of the earth: I will tell you my true intent. I have dwelt here for a long time…’”
