Mārkaṇḍeya-varṇanam
The Description of Mārkaṇḍeya
vratināṃ ca yatīnāṃ ca paricaryāparāśca ye | viyuktaparanindāśca te vai bhāgavatottamāḥ || 55 ||
Narada
Vrata: none (general ‘vrata’ mentioned)
Primary Rasa: bhakti
Secondary Rasa: shanta
It defines the “bhāgavatottama” not by status or learning, but by humility expressed as service to the disciplined (vratin) and the renounced (yati), along with freedom from fault-finding—purifying devotion through conduct and speech.
Bhakti is shown as practical seva and inner refinement: honoring devotees and saints, and removing parānindā, which is considered a major obstacle to devotion because it strengthens ego and disrupts compassion.
No specific Vedanga (like Vyākaraṇa or Jyotiṣa) is taught here; the practical takeaway is dhārmic discipline—right conduct (sadācāra) and restraint in speech as supportive practices for vrata and bhakti.
