Draupadī and Satyabhāmā on ethical household conduct
agnir yaḥ śivo nāma śaktipūjāparaś ca saḥ | duḥkhārtānāṃ ca sarveṣāṃ śivakṛt satataṃ śivaḥ ||
The verse explains the etymological and ethical sense of the name ‘Śiva’: the divine is called Śiva because he continually brings welfare (śiva) to beings in distress, emphasizing compassion and beneficence as defining divine qualities.
Mārkaṇḍeya is describing a form/aspect of Agni who is known as ‘Śiva’ and is devoted to Śakti-worship, highlighting his role as a constant benefactor of those suffering.
