Chapter 230: शकुनानि (Śakunāni) — Omens
मार्जारकुक्कुटौ ग्राम्यौ तौ चैव वनगोचरौ तयोर्भवति विज्ञानं नित्यं वै रूपभेदतः
mārjārakukkuṭau grāmyau tau caiva vanagocarau tayorbhavati vijñānaṃ nityaṃ vai rūpabhedataḥ
Lord Agni (in discourse to Sage Vasiṣṭha, as per the Agni Purana’s standard dialogue frame)
Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Philosophy","secondary_vidya":"Vyakarana","practical_application":"Epistemic rule for classification: distinguish entities by rūpa-bheda (observable form-differences) even when they share a common category label (e.g., domestic vs wild variants).","sutra_style":true}

Concept: Pratyakṣa-based discrimination: knowledge is stabilized by observable differentiators (rūpa-bheda) rather than mere naming or assumed category.
Application: In taxonomy, omen-reading, and practical life, verify identity by marks/shape/behavior, not by habitat label alone.

Related Themes: Agni Purana 230 (classification principles across animal/bird lists)
It teaches a knowledge-method: correct identification (vijñāna) arises from rūpa-bheda—distinguishing observable characteristics—rather than merely from habitat labels like “village” or “forest.”
By presenting a general rule of classification and cognition using everyday examples (animals and habitat), it models how diverse subjects can be organized and known through defining marks (lakṣaṇas), a hallmark of the text’s encyclopedic style.
Cultivating clear discrimination (viveka) reduces error and confusion; in dharmic life this supports right judgment and right action, which are foundational for wholesome karma.
