सेवातत्त्वप्रश्नः — The Question of Whom to Serve (Sevā) for the Removal of Suffering
आध्यात्मिकं यल्लिंगं प्रत्यक्षं यस्य नो भवेत् । स तल्लिंगे तथा स्थूले कल्पयेच्च न चान्यथा
ādhyātmikaṃ yalliṃgaṃ pratyakṣaṃ yasya no bhavet | sa talliṃge tathā sthūle kalpayecca na cānyathā
Sūta Gosvāmin (narrating the teaching of Śiva-worship to the sages at Naimiṣāraṇya in the Sṛṣṭikhaṇḍa context)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
It teaches a graded path: when the subtle, inner realization of Śiva (the ādhyātmika-liṅga) is not yet accessible, one should rely on the tangible Liṅga as a sacred support for devotion and contemplation, leading the mind from form to the Formless.
The verse legitimizes Saguna worship through the physical Liṅga as the proper representation of the same spiritual reality. The gross Liṅga is not “other,” but a rightful aid to approach Śiva until inner perception matures.
Use the visible Liṅga as the focus of dhyāna and pūjā—mentally superimposing the inner Śiva-principle onto it—while supporting the practice with mantra-japa (especially the Pañcākṣarī, Om Namaḥ Śivāya) as appropriate.
