Adhyaya 77 — Sanjna’s Withdrawal from Surya: The Birth of Yama and Yamuna, and the Emergence of Chhaya
yama uvāca tātaitad mahad āścaryaṃ na dṛṣṭam iti kenacit /
mātā vātsalyam utsṛjya śāpaṃ putre prayacchati

The verse asserts an ideal norm: maternal vātsalya is expected to be protective. Its rupture signals either extraordinary circumstance or hidden truth (later revelation of Chāyā).
Vaṃśānucarita: characterization and moral tension within a lineage narrative.
The ‘wonder’ indicates dharma’s subtle diagnostics: when expected natural compassion fails, it hints that the apparent relationship is not what it seems (shadow in place of true mother).
