Liberation is attained by transcendent knowledge (jñāna): perfected ascetics use knowledge as the ‘vehicle’ to cross the difficult ocean-like condition of birth and enter the pure, limitless reality (Brahman), described metaphorically as the stainless sky.
In Śānti Parva, Bhīṣma instructs Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma and the path beyond suffering. Here he summarizes the culmination of the teaching: accomplished renouncers, through knowledge, pass beyond embodied existence and reach the pure state of ultimate reality.
