FAQs

It teaches that adharma (the breaking of śīla) is not merely personal sin; it creates karmic suffering that spreads through family bonds and obstructs spiritual upliftment, which Shaiva tradition treats as essential preparation for Shiva-bhakti and liberation.

Linga-worship in the Shiva Purana is grounded in purity, self-restraint, and dharmic living; this verse warns that without śīla, external rituals become hollow and the devotee’s household harmony and spiritual merit decline, weakening steady devotion to Saguna Shiva.

The implied practice is śīla-śuddhi: daily self-discipline alongside Shiva-upāsanā—such as japa of the Panchakshara (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) with mindful restraint in speech and conduct—so that worship bears sattvic, stabilizing results.
