Adhyaya 83 — The Slaying of Mahishasura’s Armies and the Final Death of Mahishasura
tataḥ kruddhā jaganmātā caṇḍikā pānamuttamam /
papau punaḥ punaścaiva jahāsāruṇalocanā
Devī’s ‘drinking’ and laughter are not escapism but a sign of sovereign fearlessness: she faces chaos without inner collapse, converting battle into the reassertion of cosmic order.
Carita: the climactic temper of the Goddess in the demon-slaying narrative (didactic myth, not chronological manvantara material).
The ‘supreme drink’ can be read as śakti’s own surge (ānanda/udreka) before decisive action; her laughter signifies transcendence over fear and death, while red eyes indicate awakened, fierce awareness (ugra-caitanya).
