Entry into the Yakṣa-Lake Episode

sāvitrī uvāca | sakṛd aṁśo nipatati sakṛt kanyā pradīyate | sakṛd āha dadānīti trīṇy etāni sakṛt sakṛt | satyavān dīrghāyuḥ vā alpayuḥ guṇavān vā guṇahīnaḥ | mayā sa eka-vāraṁ patiḥ vṛtaḥ | adhunā ahaṁ dvitīyaṁ puruṣaṁ na varayituṁ śaknomi |

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches the dharmic weight of a once-given commitment: certain social and moral acts—inheritance allotment, giving a daughter in marriage, and a donor’s pledge—are meant to be irrevocable. Sāvitrī applies this principle to marital fidelity, asserting that her chosen husband cannot be replaced by convenience or fear.

Sāvitrī defends her decision to marry Satyavān despite ominous knowledge about his lifespan. She argues that her choice was made once and is binding, regardless of whether he is destined to live long or die soon, and regardless of his qualities; she will not seek another husband.
