रावण–मारीचसंवादः तथा मृगप्रलोभनपूर्वकं सीताहरणोपक्रमः

इह यत् क्रियते कर्म तत् परत्रोपभुज्यते । कर्मभूमिरियं ब्रह्मनू फलभूमिरसौ मता,इस मनुष्यलोकमें मानव-शरीरद्वारा जो कर्म किया जाता है, उसीको परलोकमें भोगा जाता है। ब्रह्म! यह कर्मभूमि और वह फलभोगकी भूमि मानी गयी है
iha yat kriyate karma tat paratro'pabhujyate | karmabhūmir iyaṃ brahmanū phalabhūmir asau matā ||
كلُّ عملٍ يُؤدَّى هنا في عالم البشر يُختَبَر ويُتَذَوَّق في العالم الآخر. يا براهمن، إن هذا العالم يُعَدُّ ميدانَ العمل، وأما ذاك العالم فيُعَدُّ ميدانَ تذوّق ثمرات الأعمال.
देवदूत उवाच
The verse teaches moral causality: actions performed in the human realm inevitably bear fruit that must be experienced later. This world is for choosing and doing (karma), while the next is for undergoing the consequences (phala).
A divine messenger addresses a brahmin/sage and delivers a doctrinal clarification about karma and its fruition, distinguishing the human world as the arena of action from the other world as the arena of recompense.
