Educational Q&A

The line underscores the precariousness of life in dharmic warfare: even the greatest heroes survive not only by skill but also by diṣṭi—fortune or destiny’s allotment—inviting humility amid martial pride.

Vyāsa, as narrator, remarks that Arjuna (Phālguna) has faced Karṇa in the thick of battle and yet remains alive—highlighting Karṇa’s formidable danger and the intensity of their confrontation.
