Duryodhana’s Appeal to Karna — The Kripa–Karna Dialogue
bhrātṛtvaṃ darśitaṃ pūrvaṃ ghūṇī cāpi sa sūtajaḥ | kathaṃ bhīmena yuyudhe kuntyā vākyam anusmaran ||

The verse highlights the ethical tension between personal compassion/kinship and the harsh obligations of war and allegiance. Remembering Kuntī’s appeal evokes conscience and familial duty, yet Karṇa’s chosen loyalties and the momentum of conflict drive him to fight—showing how dharma can become conflicted when identity, promises, and battlefield duty collide.
Sañjaya raises a pointed question to Dhṛtarāṣṭra: Karṇa had earlier behaved with brotherly restraint toward the Pāṇḍavas (excluding Arjuna) and is reputed to be compassionate. Given that he kept recalling Kuntī’s words, Sañjaya wonders how Karṇa nevertheless engaged Bhīma in combat, implying a struggle between remembered kinship and wartime necessity.
