Duryodhana’s Incursion and the Tumult of Battle
yathā śaṅkhasya nirghoṣaḥ pāñcajanyasya śrūyate | bhaiyā! asmiṃ samaye pāñcajanya-śaṅkha-sadṛśī dhvaniḥ śrūyate, yaśasvī vāsudevaś ca krodhena pūritaḥ san taṃ śaṅkhaṃ yathā vādyaṃ cakāra, tena pratibhāti—adya tava bhrātā arjunaḥ niścayena hataḥ san raṇabhūmau śete ||

The verse highlights how signs and sounds in war are interpreted through emotion: fear and grief can turn a familiar auspicious signal (Kṛṣṇa’s conch) into a perceived omen of disaster. It cautions that perception in crisis is shaped by inner states, not only by facts.
Sañjaya reports that a conch-blast like Kṛṣṇa’s Pāñcajanya is heard, and that Kṛṣṇa has sounded it with intense anger. From this, he infers (or conveys the impression) that Arjuna has likely been killed and lies on the battlefield, heightening suspense and dread.
