Duryodhana’s Incursion and the Tumult of Battle
tam abravīd aśru-pūrṇaḥ kṛṣṇa-sarpa iva śvasan

The verse highlights how war distorts human conduct: grief and anger overwhelm restraint, and speech arises from agitation rather than dharmic clarity—an ethical warning conveyed through vivid imagery.
Sañjaya describes a person addressing another while crying and breathing harshly, compared to a black serpent—signaling intense emotional turmoil (fearsome, heated, and unstable) at this point in the Drona Parva events.
