FAQs

It introduces karmaphala-vidyā in an afterlife-cosmology register: sinners undergo specific yātanās in distinct narakas, which the text is about to enumerate.

By cataloging narakas and punishments as part of a broader compendium—alongside ritual, governance, medicine, and poetics—this chapter adds systematic moral-legal cosmology (sin-to-consequence mapping) to the Purāṇa’s encyclopedic scope.

It frames suffering in hell as the concrete fruition of pāpa (demerit), reinforcing ethical restraint and motivating dharmic conduct to avoid such post-mortem consequences.
