Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Alamkara","secondary_vidya":"Natya","practical_application":"Use uddīpana-vibhāvas (stimulating determinants) to intensify intended emotions in poetry and drama—through setting, season, objects, gestures, and remembered impressions.","sutra_style":true}

Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Definition","entry_title":"Uddīpana-vibhāva (Emotion-kindling determinants)","lookup_keywords":["uddīpana-vibhāva","ālambana-vibhāva","bhāva","saṃskāra","rasa"],"quick_summary":"Uddīpana-vibhāvas are auxiliary stimuli—rooted in impressions/conditioning—that, in the presence of the primary support (ālambana), ignite and heighten emotional states, enabling rasa-realization."}

Concept: Emotion is evoked through causal complexes: a primary locus (ālambana) plus stimulants (uddīpana) shaped by saṃskāras; art operationalizes this causality.

Application: When crafting a scene, first fix the ālambana (lover, enemy, deity, etc.), then add uddīpanas (moonlight, fragrance, thunder, battlefield drums, temple bells) consistent with the audience’s shared saṃskāras to intensify the target bhāva.

Khanda Section: Sahitya-shastra (Kavya–Rasa–Bhava / Alamkara tradition)

Primary Rasa: adbhuta

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A schematic yet poetic scene: the lover (ālambana) stands in a moonlit garden while uddīpana elements—breeze, jasmine, cuckoo call, anklet sound, memories—visually radiate to ‘ignite’ the heart (bhāva).","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural, stylized moonlit garden; central ālambana figure with expressive eyes; surrounding symbolic uddīpana motifs (moon, flowers, breeze lines, birds) arranged like a mandala of stimuli; rich flat colors and ornate border.","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting with gold leaf, central couple/ālambana with halo-like gold; gilded moon and floral motifs as uddīpana; embossed ornaments and deep jewel tones emphasizing heightened emotion.","mysore_prompt":"Mysore painting, semi-diagrammatic composition; labeled elements for ālambana and uddīpana; delicate shading, clear separation of stimuli icons (moon, perfume, music) around the main figure.","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature, nocturnal garden with fine detailing; lover as focal point, attendants holding perfume and lamps; moon, blossoms, and birds as subtle cues; refined palette and intricate foliage."}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"contemplative","suggested_raga":"Malkauns","pace":"slow","voice_tone":"instructional"}

Sandhi Resolution Notes: विभावास्ते → विभावाः + ते; संस्कारैर् → संस्कारैः; भावानुद्वीपयन्ति → भावान् + उद्वीपयन्ति।

FAQs

It imparts kavya-shastra terminology: defining uddīpana-vibhāva as the set of stimulants that, in connection with the ālambana (the main emotional support like hero/heroine), arouse and heighten bhāvas for rasa-realization.

By codifying classical aesthetic theory (rasa–bhāva–vibhāva categories) alongside the Purana’s other disciplines, it shows the Agni Purana functioning as a compendium that includes Sanskrit poetics and dramaturgical psychology, not only ritual and theology.

Spiritually, it clarifies how refined emotional states are deliberately awakened and directed—supporting contemplative cultivation of elevated sentiments (bhāvas) and aesthetically mediated devotion, which traditional thought treats as purifying and mind-disciplining.
