Diti’s Puṁsavana Vow, Indra’s Intervention, and the Birth of the Maruts
तस्मात्पतिव्रता नार्य: श्रेयस्कामा: सुमध्यमे । यजन्तेऽनन्यभावेन पतिमात्मानमीश्वरम् ॥ ३५ ॥
tasmāt pati-vratā nāryaḥ śreyas-kāmāḥ sumadhyame yajante ’nanya-bhāvena patim ātmānam īśvaram
My dear wife, whose body is so beautiful, your waist being thin, a conscientious wife should be chaste and should abide by the orders of her husband. She should very devoutly worship her husband as a representative of Vāsudeva.
This verse says that women who seek true welfare worship and serve their husband with ananya-bhāva—exclusive, undivided dedication—regarding him as their own self and as their lord.
In the context of Diti’s vow and desire for offspring, Kashyapa instructs her on the dharmic standard of a devoted wife—emphasizing purity of intention, restraint, and single-minded fidelity as spiritually beneficial conduct.
Practice loyal, steady commitment in marriage—serving one’s spouse with respect, responsibility, and integrity—while cultivating single-pointedness and selflessness rather than divided motives.
