मधुवनभङ्गः
The Disruption of Madhuvana and Dadhimukha’s Complaint
अपरे वृक्षमूले तु शाखां गृह्य व्यवस्थिताः।अत्यर्थं च मदग्लानाः पर्णान्यास्तीर्य शेरते।।5.62.11।।
apare vṛkṣamūle tu śākhāṃ gṛhya vyavasthitāḥ |
atyarthaṃ ca madaglānāḥ parṇāny āstīrya śerate ||5.62.11||
还有一些在树根处安坐,手扶枝条而停歇;另一些则因醉意沉重,铺开树叶作榻,便就地卧下。
Some took branches of trees and rested at the root of trees. Some totally languid lay down spreading leaves due to drinking of sweet drinks.
Moderation (mādhurya with maryādā): indulgence that leads to loss of alertness undermines readiness for duty and invites disorder.
The troop’s honey-drinking continues; some become so affected that they rest or collapse beneath trees.
Implicitly, vigilance and discipline—qualities needed for a dhārmic mission—are shown to be weakened by excess.
